First snow 2014

January 2 we had our first snow, heck of a way to start off 2014. Tried to make a few photographs in the neighborhood, but this was the only one I was happy with.

Driveway in snow

Three images (+2, N, -2 stops) from my D600, processed in Photomatix Pro v5.0. They’ve really improved the software, I plan to talk about that soon.

It’s cold

For some reason, I really like to photograph ice formations. You can get abstractions, or interesting flows and curves. I’m lucky to have a creek in my back yard, so when the temperatures drop, it’s a good place photograph. Unfortunately, thanks to the periodic heavy rains and creek flooding, I also have to work around the crap (like cinderblocks and bricks and wood debris) that washes down into my portion of the creek.

Or should I say “crick?”

A new year

Happy 2014

Been away awhile. I could say I’ve been busy, which I have, but that’s no excuse. If you want to do something, you’ll make the time for it, even if that means cutting out something else, or doing extra work to make everything happen.

[Every time someone asks me what kind of camera to get a parent/sibling/child because the person is “likes to take pictures,” I say “don’t buy a camera for someone. If they want to take pictures, they’ll do the research and choose what’s best for them.” Nobody ever likes that advice.]

Making a resolution to do something doesn’t help. There’s nothing magical about January 1, and if you were going to start something, why didn’t you start on September 10? Resolutions can fail because of motivation, effort, and lack of support, but most people make resolutions that don’t matter to them.

So don’t make “resolutions,” make “plans.” Want to get more fit? Make a plan. Count calories, decide what you should and shouldn’t eat, find a trainer or workout buddy who knows more than you and will hold you accountable, and put in the work. (This is one of the things I did over the last year that has kept me busy.) Want to take more/better pictures? Make a plan. Create a project, stick to it. Create results, and post them somewhere that others can hold you accountable and encourage you to photograph more.

Want to blog? Make a plan. 🙂

Whatever you do, it’s only if you want it. Make it so.
